"Bao" is a heartwarming 2018 animated short film produced by Pixar Animation Studios. The story revolves around a Chinese-Canadian woman suffering from empty nest syndrome, who gets a second shot at motherhood when one of her homemade dumplings springs to life. As the dumpling boy grows rapidly, the woman struggles with the need to protect and nurture, and the reality of letting go.

Making / Production

The movie was directed by Domee Shi, making her the first woman to direct a Pixar short. It took four years to complete, primarily due to the technical challenges in animating food in a convincing manner. Another major focus was on creating culturally authentic characters and settings. It was produced by Becky Neiman-Cobb.
