Benedetta, a drama film released in 2021, is based on the non-fiction book Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy by Judith C. Brown. It is directed by Paul Verhoeven and retells a controversial story of Benedetta Carlini, a novice nun in 17th-century Italy.

The plot revolves around Benedetta Carlini, who starts to experience religious and erotic visions. She develops a romantic/sexual relationship with Bartolomea, another nun. Claiming to have miraculous healing abilities, matters become complicated when church authorities start to investigate her divine visions and claims of miraculous powers.

Making / Production

The movie is a collaboration of producers Saïd Ben Saïd and Michel Merkt under SBS Productions. Shot in French and later dubbed in English, and other languages, the filming took place in several locations across Italy, aptly depicting the period setting.

Actors
