About Blithe Spirit

Released in 1945, "Blithe Spirit" is a British comedy movie directed by David Lean. The film is based on a witty and delightful play of the same name by Noel Coward. The plot revolves around a novelist, Charles Condomine, who invites an eccentric medium to his house to conduct a seance in order to gather material for his next book. The session brings back the spirit of his deceased first wife, Elvira. The ghost creates chaos in his life as it is only visible to him, leaving his new wife, Ruth, believing him to be mad.

Making / Production

Coward's play was challenging to adapt on-screen—its narrative depended on the audience believing in the ghostly presence of Elvira, something easier to accomplish on a theatrical stage. However, Lean and his team rose to the challenge with innovative cinematographic techniques, creating a lasting classic.
