The series is primarily set in New York City and is created by Andrew W. Marlowe. It centers around Richard Castle, a best-selling mystery novelist, who tags along NYPD homicide detective Kate Beckett to solve unusual crimes in New York City.

- Throughout the show, Castle has different colored "Murder Boards." They change color to indicate how close they are to solving the case.
