C.R.A.Z.Y. is a 2005 Canadian coming-of-age drama film directed by Jean-Marc Vallée and co-written with François Boulay. The movie recounts the story of a young gay man dealing with homophobia while growing up with four brothers and a conservative father in 1960s and 1970s Quebec. The film employs an extensive selection of music, an unconventional narrative structure, and a surrealistic visual style to embellish the narrative.

Making / Production

The film was shot in Montreal and partly in Jerusalem. It was produced by Cirrus Communications and distributed by TVA Films in Canada, IDP Distribution in the United States, and Gaumont in France. Despite tight production budget, the film achieved a remarkable level of depth and complexity.

C.R.A.Z.Y. swept the Jutra Awards in 2006, winning 13 out of 14 categories. It was also selected as Canada's official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 78th Academy Awards, but it did not make the final shortlist.
