About Cyborg
"Cyborg" is a 1989 American martial-arts cyberpunk film directed by Albert Pyun. The plot revolves around a mercenary named Gibson Rickenbacker (Jean-Claude Van Damme) who embarks on a mission to save a Cyborg woman (Dayle Haddon) carrying vital information for curing a plague that is decimating humanity.
Making / Production
Developed by Cannon Films, "Cyborg" was initially planned to be a sequel to "Masters of the Universe" and a Spider-Man project. However, due to financial reasons, both projects were scrapped and ultimately combined into "Cyborg". The film was shot mostly in the streets of Downtown L.A. and the Hell's Gate Bridge scene was filmed at Indian Dunes.
Actors
- Jean-Claude Van Damme as Gibson Rickenbacker, delivers an impressive martial-arts-infused performance as the determined and ruthless lead character.
- Dayle Haddon as Pearl Prophet, the Cyborg, brilliantly portrays the vulnerability and resilience in her character.
- Vincent Klyn as Fender Tremolo, plays the vicious and menacing antagonist who seeks to control the cure and rule over the dystopian future world.
Trivia / Interesting Facts
- The film was created with a budget of $500,000 in an attempt to cover some of the financial loss from two other Cannon films which were scrapped. It eventually grossed over $10 million worldwide.
- Jean-Claude Van Damme choreographed the fights himself and also caused a co-star to lose sight in one eye during filming.
- The working title of the film was initially "Slinger" before being renamed "Cyborg".
