About Gargoyles
Gargoyles is an iconic American animated television series produced by Walt Disney Television Animation and Buena Vista Television. Released between 1994 and 1996, the storyline delves into the lives of nocturnal creatures known as Gargoyles that turn to stone during the day. In the Middle Ages, Gargoyles were known to protect Scotland, but a curse cast on them made them turn into stone forever, until their castle rises over the skies. When a millionaire buys the Gargoyle castle and relocates it to New York City (high above the skyscrapers), the Gargoyles are awakened and they continue their historic role of protecting but now in a modern context.
Making / Production
Gargoyles was co-created by Greg Weisman and Frank Paur, with a team of writers and artists who meticulously worked on blending social commentary with mythological story arcs to bring an unconventional show on-air. The show was ahead of its time, with serialized storylines, intricate character relationships and darker tones typically not seen in animated shows of its era.
