"Gunpowder" is an explosive historical drama miniseries that first aired on BBC One in October 2017 and subsequently on HBO. The three-part series examines the historical events surrounding the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605, orchestrated by disgruntled Catholic conspirators aiming to blow up the British House of Lords and assassinate King James I, in order to restore a Catholic monarch to the throne.

Making / Production

The series, produced by Kudos and Kit Harington’s Thriker Films, has been lauded for its rich, moody cinematography and meticulously researched historical details. Interlocking directorial work was done by J Blakeson and it was written by Ronan Bennett. Parts of the series were filmed on location in Yorkshire, England, which provided a gritty and evocative backdrop to the action.
