About I'll Be Gone In The Dark

I'll Be Gone In The Dark is a chilling and gripping six-part series, released in 2019. Based on the bestselling book of the same name, the TV series is a deep dive into the investigation led by crime writer Michelle McNamara into the grim life of the violent predator she dubbed "The Golden State Killer."' McNamara lived a quiet life as a writer, mother, and wife, but was fascinated by law enforcement's failure to catch the offender, and committed herself to solving the case, which ended tragically with her unexpected death before the series was filmed.

Making / Production

Directed by Liz Garbus, the series is a combination of recreated scenes, archival footage and police records, and new interviews with detectives, survivors, and family members of the killer. It also incorporates original recordings and excerpts from McNamara's book, read by actor Amy Ryan.

Actors

  • Amy Ryan - Ryan provided the poignant and gripping voiceovers as McNamara, infusing the narration with the same sense of urgency and passion that drove McNamara in her pursuit of the truth.
  • Patton Oswalt - Oswalt, as McNamara's grieving husband, shared valuable insights about his late wife and her relentless pursuit of the Golden State Killer.
  • Peter Mullan and Carolyn Strauss - They served as executive producers, giving life and edge to the narration and directing the series to maintain the engaging storytelling.

Trivia / Interesting Facts

  • The Golden State Killer, Joseph James DeAngelo, was arrested in April 2018, just two months after McNamara's book was published.
  • The title of both the book and the series comes from a quote DeAngelo said to one of his victims: "You'll be silent forever, and I'll be gone in the dark."
  • The book was completed by McNamara's researcher Paul Haynes and investigative journalist Billy Jensen after her death.

Awards

The show was nominated for a Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Limited Series.

Quotes

  • "It’s chaos out there. We may be experiencing feelings of helplessness, fear, confusion. But there’s another side to it. Because, what we’re really afraid of, the great unknown, oh, we’re going to know a lot more about it before too long." - Excerpt from the Book read in the TV Series.

Music, Soundtrack

  • The haunting score by Philip Sheppard perfectly complements the dark and eerie atmosphere of the series.
  • Leonard Cohen's track 'You Want It Darker' effectively sets the tone of the series in the trailer and is included in the series music.
