The Incredible Journey (1963)

About The Incredible Journey

The Incredible Journey, released in 1963, is an adventure film directed by Fletcher Markle. It is based on Sheila Burnford's best-selling novel of the same name. The film centers around two dogs and a cat as they traverse the Canadian wilderness to reunite with their owners.

The film begins when the animals' owners, the Hunter family, leave for a holiday and entrust their pets - a young Labrador Retriever named Luath, an old Bull Terrier named Bodger, and a Siamese cat named Tao, to John Longridge, a family friend. When America comes, the pets, thinking that they've been abandoned, embark on a journey across the wilderness to find their way home.

Making / Production

The Incredible Journey was produced by Walt Disney Productions. It was known for its realism, avoiding the use of narrative voices for the animals, unlike many other animal-themed films of its time. The movie was filmed in the wilderness of Ontario and Alberta, Canada, adding authenticity to its visuals.

Actors

  • Syn: Played the role of Tao, the Siamese cat. Syn was chosen for her agility and outgoing nature.
  • Rink: Portrayed the role of Luath, the Labrador Retriever. Rink was known for his friendly and loyal demeanor that perfectly embodied Luath.
  • Tao: Played the character of Bodger, the old Bull Terrier. His exceptional portraying of Bodger's loyal and determined nature won hearts.

Trivia / Interesting Facts

  • The film was based on a novel which was inspired by a true story.
  • Despite being a Disney film, there were no talking animals, unlike most Disney Productions of the time.
  • It was remade in 1993 as Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey, which gave the animals speaking roles.

Awards

Despite its popularity, the film did not win any major awards. However, its remade version Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey had received much critical acclaim and several award nominations.
