About Insecure

Insecure is a popular American comedy-drama television series that aired on HBO from 2016, created by Issa Rae and Larry Wilmore. The story revolves around the life of the lead character, Issa Dee, who is played by Issa Rae. Issa Dee is an African-American woman who has to deal with her insecurities and societal pressure while navigating her life in Los Angeles. The series provides a fresh and humorous examination of black culture and the real-life complicated experiences of African American women portrayed through Issa and her best friend Molly.

Making / Production

Rae and Wilmore co-created the series, with Rae also serving as the executive producer alongside Prentice Penny, Melina Matsoukas, Michael Rotenberg, Dave Becky, and Jonathan Berry. The idea for the series was loosely based on Rae's web series 'Awkward Black Girl’ and the characters and plot were developed over time, portraying modern-day black life and struggles through humor and authenticity. It was filmed on a variety of locations in Los Angeles, California.
