"Jiro Dreams of Sushi" is a 2012 documentary film directed by David Gelb. The film celebrates 85-year-old Jiro Ono, considered by many to be the world’s greatest sushi chef. Jiro is the owner of Sukiyabashi Jiro, a 10-seat sushi-only restaurant in Tokyo. Despite its humble appearances, it is the first of its kind to be awarded a prestigious 3 star Michelin review, and sushi lovers from around the globe make pilgrimage. The film follows Jiro's meticulous sushi crafting, his relationship with his heirs, and his tireless pursuit of perfection.

Making / Production

Director David Gelb originally planned to shoot a film about sushi as a general subject. After experiencing the quality and artistry at Sukiyabashi Jiro, he decided to focus the film on Jiro and his methodical process. It took Gelb more than a year to gain full permission and trust from Jiro to film his documentary.
