About "When Marnie Was There" (Japanese Audio)

"When Marnie Was There" is a beautiful, poignant animated film from the esteemed Japanese animation house, Studio Ghibli, first released in 2014. The film follows the young and introspective Anna Sasaki who, upon moving to the seaside town of Norfolk, meets Marnie, a mysterious girl who lives in a mansion. Anna’s encounter with Marnie sets the stage for a tale of friendship, self-discovery, and healing.

Making / Production

The film was adapted from Joan G. Robinson's 1967 novel of the same name and was the last feature film produced by Studio Ghibli, before the studio announced a brief pause in production following the retirement of director Hayao Miyazaki. "When Marnie Was There" was directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi and marks his second directorial work for Studio Ghibli.

Actors
