The Mothman Prophecies is a 2002 American supernatural horror-mystery film directed by Mark Pellington, and starring Richard Gere and Laura Linney. The screenplay by Richard Hatem is based on the 1975 book of the same name by parapsychologist and Fortean author John Keel. The plot centers around a reporter (Richard Gere) who is drawn to a small West Virginia town to investigate strange events that are believed to be linked to the mythical Mothman creature.

The film was produced by Screen Gems and Lakeshore Entertainment, and was released on January 25, 2002. The Mothman Prophecies was shot mainly in Pennsylvania and Washington D.C., which captured the eerie atmosphere of the story.
