Palm Springs is a 2020 American science fiction romantic comedy film directed by Max Barbakow and written by Andy Siara. The film is a despairing comedy about two strangers, Nyles (Andy Samberg) and Sarah (Cristin Milioti), who meet at a wedding in Palm Springs only to get stuck in a time loop.

Making / Production

The film was officially announced in November 2018, with filming taking place in and around Palm Springs in April the following year. The production was carried out under the banner of independent film and TV company Party Over Here and distributed by Hulu and Neon after its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.

• Andy Samberg as Nyles: Samberg plays a carefree partyer stuck in a time loop who pulls off a character who's both comedic and tragic beautifully.
• Cristin Milioti as Sarah: Milioti is phenomenal in her portrayal of Sarah, a reluctant participant in the endless loop.
• J.K. Simmons as Roy: Simmons gives a memorable performance as a fellow wedding guest who also gets stuck in the time loop.

Trivia / Interesting Facts

• This film was the highest sale out of the Sundance Film Festival, along with a record-breaking acquisition of $17,500,000.69, which was 69 cents more than the previous record holder.
• In the caves scenes, the painting on the wall is a petroglyph of Kokopelli, a fertility deity venerated by some Native American cultures in the Southwestern United States, who is known as a trickster god and represents the spirit of music.
• The film only took 21 days to shoot.

Awards

"Palm Springs" was nominated for two Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, and Best Actor - Musical or Comedy for Andy Samberg. Additionally, it received nominations at the Critics' Choice Movie Awards and Satellite Awards among others.
