Making / Production

'Queen of Katwe' is produced by Walt Disney Pictures and ESPN Films. Renowned Indian director, Mira Nair helmed the project. The filming took place entirely in Africa, primarily in the Katwe slums and Johannesburg, South Africa, to capture the authentic grit and panorama of Phiona's world.

Actors

  • Lupita Nyong'o plays Nakku Harriet, Phiona's mother. Her fierce and emotionally charged performance embodies the spirit of a protective mother who has faced life's challenges head-on.
  • David Oyelowo portrays Robert Katende, a missionary and chess coach. His character is portrayed as a driving force behind Phiona's success.
