About Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai

"Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai" (Japanese: 青春ブタ野郎はバニーガール先葉いない) is a popular Japanese light novel series written by Hajime Kamoshida. In 2018, this was adapted into an anime television series. The story revolves around a high school student Sakuta Azusagawa who encounters various girls suffering from "Adolescence Syndrome", a peculiar and mysterious phenomenon.

Making / Production

This series was directed by Sōichi Masui and animated by CloverWorks. The magic and charm of the series comes from the incredible blend of surrealism (stemming from the Adolescence Syndrome) with the ordinary life of high school students. This balance was maintained through careful direction, animation, and storytelling.

Actors

  • Kaito Ishikawa is the voice behind the main character, Sakuta Asazugawa. He portrayed Sakuta's aloof personality brilliantly while perfectly capturing his more sensitive side when needed.
  • Asami Seto played the role of Mai Sakurajima, a popular actress who becomes invisible to everyone around her. She layered her performance with elements of strength, vulnerability, and emotional depth.
  • Nao Tōyama provided voice for Tomoe Koga, making her character sprightly yet endearing.

Trivia / Interesting Facts

  • The title of the series is a play on the Japanese saying “A rascal dreams of a bunny girl” which suggests that it’s about someone idle with lewd thoughts. In contrast, the series is largely about the challenges faced during adolescence.
  • Despite its title, the anime is not a harem and the "Bunny Girl" component refers only to the first arc of the series.

Music, Soundtrack

  • The opening theme of the series is "Kimi no Sei" by The Peggies.
  • The ending theme is "Fukashigi no Carte" which is unique as each arc of the series uses a different version of the song, sung by the voice actress of the arc's lead female character.
