About Return to Oz

"Return to Oz" is a 1985 American dark fantasy film directed by Walter Murch and released by Walt Disney Pictures. A sequel to the 1939 film "The Wizard of Oz," it brings back the character of Dorothy Gale, played by Fairuza Balk, but presents a more surreal, creepy, and intense take on L. Frank Baum's Oz series. After being deemed insane by her Aunt and Uncle, Dorothy is sent to have electrotherapy only to find herself returning to a deteriorated Oz which she must save from the hands of the Nome King and Princess Mombi.

Making / Production

The film, being far darker and eerie than its predecessor had a much different stylistic approach than the original. Numerous re-writes, production delays, and the decision to use stop-motion animation contributed to the long and costly production process. Despite these challenges, the film is often recognized for its impressive visual effects, set designs, and for maintaining closeness to Baum's original works.

Actors

  • Fairuza Balk as Dorothy: At only age 11, she brought a brave and empathetic character to life, capturing the courage and perseverance of Dorothy in this dark rendition of Oz.
  • Nicol Williamson as Dr. Worley/Nome King: He played the dual role of the evil Nome King and psychiatric doctor with a convincing transformation from seemingly kind-hearted to evil.
  • Jean Marsh as Nurse Wilson/Princess Mombi: She portrayed the villainous and fearsome Princess Mombi and a stern, cruel nurse, delivering a bone-chilling performance.
