About RoboCop Director's Cut

RoboCop Director's Cut, released in 1987, is a groundbreaking sci-fi movie by Director Paul Verhoeven. This version includes additional scenes, enriching the already intense tale. The film is set in a crime-ridden Detroit, in the near future. The city contracts the megacorporation Omni Consumer Products (OCP) to operate its police force. When Officer Alex Murphy (Peter Weller) gets brutally murdered by a gang of criminals, OCP uses his corpse to create a prototype robotic police officer, known as Robocop.

Making / Production

The film's production was a large undertaking, combining elements of science fiction and dark humor - a unique blend for its time. Using miniatures, matte paintings, and stop-motion animation along with traditional live-action, Director's Cut version includes more violent scenes making it more gritty and dramatic than the traditional theatrical release. The movie was primarily shot on location in Dallas, Texas.

Actors

  • Peter Weller as RoboCop / Officer Alex Murphy: Weller’s physical precision lent believability to the robotic movements and contrasted with the human emotions underlying his mechanical exterior.
  • Nancy Allen as Officer Anne Lewis: Allen's spirited performance provided a sense of warmth and humanity, balancing the brutality prevalent in the movie.
  • RoboCop boasts an exceptional supporting cast, with Ronny Cox as Dick Jones, Kurtwood Smith as Clarence Boddicker, and Miguel Ferrer as Bob Morton. Each actor embodied their characters, making them memorable and nuanced.

Trivia / Interesting Facts

  • The film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, which considers it "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
  • Peter Weller had to train in martial arts to manage the weight of the RoboCop suit, which weighed around 40 pounds.
  • RoboCop's gun was a heavily modified Beretta 93R. It was so large that it had to be housed in a special holster on RoboCop's leg.

Awards

RoboCop garnered a lot of critical acclaim, winning the Saturn Award for Best Science Fiction Film, and the Academy Award for Best Sound Editing. It also received nominations for Best Film Editing and Best Sound Mixing.

  • Additionally, the soundtrack contains darker, more ominous themes for the film's villains and a number of faster-paced action cues.
