About The Rookie

The Rookie is a sports drama film that was released in 2002. The movie is based on the true story of Jim Morris, a man who had a brief, but famous Major League Baseball career. After arm injuries sidelined his minor league baseball career, Morris became a high school baseball coach. After losing a bet with his high school team, Morris finds himself trying out for the Major League, and incredibly, he becomes the oldest rookie.

Making/Production

The Rookie was produced by Walt Disney and directed by John Lee Hancock. The screenwriter was Mike Rich, and it was filmed in Texas, in locations like Austin, Thorndale, and Round Rock. It was one of the few movies that accurately portrayed the sport of baseball in an authentic way, due to director Hancock's insistence on eschewing the typical movie baseball choreography.
