Sawdust and Tinsel is a Swedish drama film released in 1953. Directed by Ingmar Bergman, the movie is a melancholy reflection on love, betrayal, and humiliation. Set within a travelling circus, the narrative takes shape around the ill-fated relationship between the circus boss, Albert Johansson (Åke Grönberg), and his mistress, Anne (Harriet Andersson).

Making / Production

The film was produced by Svensk Filmindustri, and is considered one of the finest works of director Ingmar Bergman. The films dark, evocative atmosphere was a significant departure from his previous work and marked a creative turning point for Bergman. The movie was shot by legendary cinematographer Sven Nykvist.
