About Sea of Hope: America's Underwater Treasures

'Sea of Hope: America's Underwater Treasures' is a 2017 National Geographic documentary that follows legendary oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle, marine photographer Brian Skerry, author and historian Maxwell Kennedy, and their young crew of 'aquanauts'. They embark on a year-long journey to explore and document the untouched ocean wilderness of the United States' national marine sanctuaries and monuments, from the Florida Keys to the Hawaiian Islands. The intent is to inspire the next generation’s 'blue guardians' to care for the endangered global seas.

Making / Production

The documentary is the brainchild of Director Robert Nixon and co-director David Gross, who brilliantly translated the challenges facing our marine ecosystem in a visually stunning manner. National Geographic society was in charge of the production. The cinematography by Brian Skerry was absolutely phenomenal and helped to capture the beauty of the underwater world.
