"Star Trek: Discovery", a television series launched in 2017, is the seventh series in the Star Trek franchise. It is set approximately a decade before the original Star Trek series and follows the crew of the USS Discovery. The series explores the Milkey Way galaxy, while the threat of war looms with the Klingon empire.

Making / Production

The series was announced by CBS in November 2015, with Bryan Fuller joining as showrunner by February 2016. Fuller had been a lifelong Star Trek fan, and had previously worked on the series "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and "Star Trek: Voyager". The production team was striving to feature a diverse cast, and maintain the series' tradition of progressive politics.

Actors

• Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham: She gives a brilliant performance as Starfleet officer. She was raised by the Vulcan Sarek, and is the show's protagonist.
• Doug Jones as Saru: A performance expert in creature roles, Jones plays Saru, a Kelpien serving as the Discovery's first officer.
• Shazad Latif as Voq/Ash Tyler: Latif impressively plays two roles - Voq, a Klingon war leader, who is later revealed as Ash Tyler, a Starfleet prisoner of war.

Trivia / Interesting Facts

• This is the first Star Trek series to focus on a first officer rather than the ship's captain.
• The show's title, "Discovery", was inspired by the ships and submarines named Discovery in different countries, especially the Space Shuttle Discovery.
• "Star Trek: Discovery" was specifically designed to have a cinematic feel, and aimed to be a show you could watch on a movie screen.

Awards

"Star Trek: Discovery" has received several awards and nominations. This includes the Saturn Award for Best New Media Television Series, and a Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Award for Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup.
