About Tombstone

Tombstone is a 1993 American Western film directed by George P. Cosmatos, written by Kevin Jarre (who was also the original director, but was replaced early in production), and starring Kurt Russell as Wyatt Earp, Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday, and Sam Elliott as Virgil Earp. The plot follows the Earp brothers and Doc Holliday as they move to Tombstone, Arizona, aiming for a peaceful life, but end up clashing with a group of lawless cowboys known as 'The Cowboys.'

Making / Production

Kevin Jarre was initially set to direct after writing the screenplay, but was eventually replaced by George P. Cosmatos. Filming primarily took place at Old Tucson Studios, just outside Tucson. Jarre remained on set for sometime after he was replaced, as he had a cameo in the movie, which he performed before leaving the project.

Actors

  • Kurt Russell as Wyatt Earp: A former lawman with a reputation as one of the toughest and deadliest gunmen of his day. Russell portrayed the character with a blend of steely resolve and humanitarian undertones.
  • Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday: A gambler and gunman, whose friendship with Wyatt Earp leads to a legendary partnership. Kilmer's portrayal of the terminally ill Holliday was enthusiastic and lauded as the highlight of the film.
  • Sam Elliot as Virgil Earp: This elder brother of Wyatt Earp was depicted as a strong and righteous – if a bit cynical – lawman by the veteran actor Sam Elliot.

Trivia / Interesting Facts

  • Despite the movie's portrayal of Doc Holliday as a heavy drinker, in reality, he was a moderate drinker. He was more addicted to gambling.
  • Kurt Russell revealed in later years that he effectively directed the film after Jarre was let go.
  • In the Latin duel scene, 'Doc' Holliday is actually using correct Latin.

Awards

The performance of Val Kilmer was commended, earning him the Best Supporting Actor award from the National Society of Film Critics.
