About Treasure Planet
Treasure Planet is a 2002 American animated science fiction action adventure film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. It is a science fiction adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's adventure novel Treasure Island, depicting a teenager's space adventure to the farthest reaches of the universe with pirates, high-tech gadgetry, and intergalactic peril.
Making / Production
Directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, Treasure Planet took nearly four years to create, involving a total of nearly 350 people. The film uniquely blended 2D traditional hand-drawn animation with the extensive use of computer-generated imagery. It also used the Deep Canvas process, which was first developed for Tarzan, to create 3D backgrounds.
Actors
- Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Jim Hawkins: A rebellious teenager who finds the map to Treasure Planet. Gordon-Levitt lends a touching vulnerability to the character as he matures throughout the journey.
- Brian Murray as Long John Silver: A cyborg cook of the ship and secretly, an enigmatic pirate leader. Murray perfectly balances Silver's menacing and tender sides.
- David Hyde Pierce as Dr. Doppler: A loyal friend of Jim's family who supports Jim in his quest. His character provides much of the film's comic relief.
- Emma Thompson as Captain Amelia: The feline, no-nonsense and seasoned ship captain. Thompson brings to life Captain Amelia’s charismatic personality.
Trivia / Interesting Facts
- The film reportedly took over three and a half years to create, with a total of 1,027 different scenes depicted in 1,365 shots.

- The spacecraft, 'R.L.S. Legacy,' is named after Robert Louis Stevenson, the author of Treasure Island.
Awards
Treasure Planet was nominated for the 2003 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, demonstrating its outstanding adventure storytelling and animation.
