About Turning Red

Turning Red is an animated comedy family movie released in 2022. It was directed by Domee Shi and produced by Pixar Animation Studios. The movie narrates the life of a 13-year-old girl named Meilin Lee, who turns into a giant red panda whenever she gets too excited or stressed.

Making / Production

The production of Turning Red took several years and was generally a collaboration between crewtives. Directed by Domee Shi, the first woman to helm a full-length Pixar feature, and produced by Lindsey Collins, it featured an all-female leadership team.

Actors

  • Rosie Perez as Meilin's mother, Ming Lee. The veteran actress depicts the character as a caring, albeit overbearing, mother who is both loving and a significant source of stress for Meilin.
  • Sandra Oh as her friend Miriam. Oh brings her trademark wit and strength to this supporting role, enlivening every scene she's in.
  • Orion Lee makes his Pixar debut as Meilin's father, Jin Lee - a supportive and understanding figure in Meilin's life.
  • Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Ramona Young, Ava Morse, and Hyein Park portray Meilin's friends Priya, Abby, Miriam, and Devon, respectively. Their rapport and chemistry lend a resonantly real element to their characters' relationships.

Trivia / Interesting Facts

  • Turning Red is Pixar's first feature film directed by a woman.
  • The lead character, Meilin, and her friends are all named after the voice actors' own mothers.
  • Turning Red is Pixar’s second film to revolve around an Asian family, following Bao (2018), which was also directed by Domee Shi.

Music, Soundtrack

  • The movie features a catchy pop soundtrack, including original songs by Billie Eilish and Finneas O'Connell.
  • The film's score was composed by Ludwig Göransson, known for his work on "Black Panther" and "The Mandalorian."
