About The Laramie Project

The Laramie Project is a poignant HBO movie released in 2002, based on a real-life event that shook America in the late 90s. The film is a dramatization of the aftermath of the murder of Matthew Shepard, a young, gay student brutally killed in Laramie, Wyoming. The movie is an adaptation of a play by Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project and records their visits to Laramie after the murder. The movie weaves together interviews, journal entries, and published news reports to create a vivid picture of a town forced to confront itself in the mirror of national scrutiny.

Making / Production

The making of The Laramie Project took the form of a true ensemble theater effort. After the murder of Shepard, the members of the Tectonic Theater Project went to Laramie and conducted hundreds of interviews with its residents. The movie script was developed directly from these interviews and other found texts. Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project directed and produced the film which was released by HBO Films.

Actors
